Exam 2 Blueprint ANS Adrenergic Agonist - Sympathomimetic A. Alpha-Receptors I. Alpha1 - Phenylephrine - Vasoconstriction, -Increase BP, -Mydriasis (Pupillary Dilatation), -Decongestant- Relieves nasal congestion, -Urinary Bladder- increased closure of the internal sphincter II. Alpha2 - Clonidine - Inhibits NE release, - Decrease BP B. Beta-Receptors I. Beta1 – Heart - Increase HR → Increase BP, - Increase Heart contractility II. Beta2 – Lungs – Albuterol - Bronchodilation, - Relaxation of Uterine Muscles Adrenergic Antagonist/ Blocker - Sympatholytic Drugs A. Alpha Blocker - socin - Vasodilate - Decrease BP - Treatment for BPH - Benign prostatic hyperplasia B. Beta Blocker - Atenolol, Metoprolol - Decrease HR - Decrease Heart Contractility - Bronchoconstriction Contraindication - Asthma - Bradycardia - Cardiac Decomposition Adrenergic Agonist – Sympathomimetic Drugs * The dosage for these agents needs to be calculated from a child’s body weight and age. * Older patients should be started on lower doses of the drug and should be monitored. A. Alpha- and Beta- Adrenergic Agonists - Epinephrine (Adrenalin, Sus-Phrine) - Dopamine (Intropin): I. Action - adrenergic receptors, - heart rate increases, - bronchi dilate, - vasoconstriction occurs, - intraocular pressure decreases, - glycogenolysis II. Indications - Treatment of hypotensive shock, bronchospasm, and some types of asthma III. Adverse Reactions - hypertension, palpitations - Headache and sweating, tension and anxiety (Sympathomimetic Effects/ Response) B. Alpha-Specific Adrenergic Agonists (Alpha-Agonists)
