VOCABULARY
Adaptation: the process by which organisms become adjusted or change (fit) within their particular environment.
Allelochemical: a chemical produced by a living organism, exerting a detrimental physiological effect on the individuals of another species when released into the environment/many chemical types:
-ex: terpenoids (primary Carbon compounds) essential oils; derived from isoprenoids
      -display volatility (aromatic)
-small differences in chemical structure can have large effects in function
Altruism: individuals put themselves at risk for the benefit of species enhancement (for better of the species)
       -self-sacrificing behavior
-helps others but diminishes own chance of producing offspring
Anaerobic Respiration: without oxygen
-animals: lactate fermentation (produces a little bit of ATP): pyruvic acid --> lactic acid
-plants: alcoholic fermentation (produces a little bit of ATP): pyruvic acid --> ethyl alcohol
Anabolism: -metabolic process
      -small chemicals to large chemicals
-builds molecules the body needs -i.e. photosynthesis requires energy
Anaerobic Respiration: 1st stage of cellular respiration (Glycolysis)
ATP: Adenosine Tri-Phosphate: Energy created from a breakdown of glucose.
Biochemical View: CO2 regulation. Atmospheric CO2 is regulated primarily by organisms.
Biogeography: The study of patterns in the geographic distribution of species and communities.
Biome: Any of Earth’s major land ecosystems characterized by climate and main vegetation
