Chest Exam – Look at shape, symmetry, expansion, color, bruising, lacerations, redness, and respiratory effort (is there use of accessory muscles) **Seated position, ask client to breathe through the mouth BREATH SOUNDS- 6 FRONT AND BACK 2 EACH SIDE COMPARE SECTIONS Bronchial – Next to trachea; loud, high-pitched Bronchovesicular – Sternal border between scapula; medium loudness, medium pitch Tracheal – Over trachea; harsh high-pitched Vesicular – Remainder of lungs; Soft, low-pitched Abnormal Breath Sounds: Crackles (Rales) – Air passing through fluid or mucus in any air passage; most commonly heard in the base of the lower lung. (Pneumonia). Wheeze – Air passing through constricted bronchus as a result secretions, swelling and tumors; Heard all over the lungs. (ASTHMA) Hypoxia – deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues; associated with clubbing and barrel chest 2 signs CLUBBING AND BARREL CHEST. ORTHOPNEA: Shortness of breath (dyspnea) that occurs when lying flat, causing the person to have to sleep propped up in bed or sitting in a chair. Emphysema: Gradual thinning & destruction of alveoli, mainly caused by cigarette smoking, it’s a long term progressive process that’s incurable, S/S: SOB, cough Chest Configurations: THORACIC EXPANSION- FINGERS ON BACK IN V, ASK CLIENT TO BREATH AND SEE IF HANDS MOVE WITH BREATH THORACIC EXCURSION-
